Day 4981: Stories I Tell Myself

Stories I tell myself include the following:

  • People are basically good.
  • People are stupid enough to believe what they want to believe despite the facts.
  • Mistakes are fatal.
  • I can make a difference.
  • Nobody listens to me.
  • Nothing matters.
  • Everything matters.

It helps me to remember that these and countless other assumptions are stories I tell myself. I want to be open to new stories of all kinds.

Are there stories I tell myself in my images for today?

.

Here’s what I find when I search for “stories I tell myself” on YouTube.

.

.

I’m so grateful for all the people who are here for stories I tell myself, including YOU!

Day 4668: What gets stuck in our heads

In my therapy groups, people discuss what gets stuck in our heads, including negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, regrets about the past, and fears about the future.

Here’s an example of what gets stuck in our heads.

.

Wonderful people also get stuck in my head (thank goodness) including the late Eleanor Counselman, whose memorial service I attended yesterday.

Let’s look for more examples of what gets stuck in our heads.

.

On World Thrombosis Day, I hope a thrombosis doesn’t get stuck in our heads.

Here’s the tune that often gets stuck in my head.

,

What gets stuck in your head?

Gratitude can also get stuck in our heads, so THANK YOU!

Day 4547: Blame

Blame is one of the cognitive distortions that human minds automatically do.

I’m to blame for this description of blaming:

.

I’m also to blame for this song parody, which I might sing at a No Kings protest today.

.

Do you see blame in my other images for today?

.

Here’s what I find when I search for blame on YouTube:

.

Thank to Brené Brown, my friends on Twitter, cool cats everywhere, peaceful protesters, and everyone who is here for this blame post, including YOU.

Day 4545: Exaggerating

I try to avoid exaggerating because I value authenticity and honesty.

Exaggerating can make a better story, but I hope I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve done that very few times.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that I will be going to more than one protest on Saturday and that I hope to sing my protest song “You Don’t Scare Me.”

I’m also not exaggerating when I say that I usually have trouble spelling “exaggerating” because I think different letters should be doubled.

Because I dislike exaggerating, I just rewrote the last sentence, changing “always” to “usually.”

I’m also not exaggerating when I point out that humans tend to think in all-or-nothing ways (“always” and “never” rather than “usually”).

Do you see exaggerating in my photos for today?

.

I’m not exaggerating about this: I submitted this to a songwriting contest yesterday even though I know it’s very unlikely to win.

.

I don’t think I’m exaggerating my talent as a songwriter. I believe a lot of people downplay their own talents for fear of being seen as exaggerating (and conceited).

I’m not exaggerating about this: almost all the people I work with are terrified of overestimating their worthiness while they have no problem underestimating that — exaggerating their flaws to an excessive degree.

What are your thoughts and feelings about exaggerating?

I’m never exaggerating when I write that I am deeply grateful for YOU.

Day 4520: Obstacles

We all encounter obstacles every day. For me, some obstacles are more upsetting than others.

I particularly struggle with obstacles I believe I should be able to figure out on my own. Of course, shoulds (and other cognitive distortions) are obstacles to peace of mind.

Yesterday, I was stumped, stopped, and stymied by an obstacle when I tried to use a music distribution service for the first time. I got an error message when I answered that the language of my protest song was English.

.

Not knowing how to overcome that obstacle, I googled solutions and couldn’t find any. Then, I contacted customer support but haven’t heard back. These kinds of obstacles are an obstacle to my enjoying my weekend.

Why are there so many obstacles to my getting my music out there? Do I have what it takes to overcome these obstacles? How do I overcome the obstacles of my self doubt, my inexperience with the music business, AND my impatience? Who can help me with these obstacles?

What obstacles do you see in my other images for today?

.

When I search for obstacles on YouTube, I find this…

.

… and this.

.

Here’s a comment about obstacles from that second video:

.

Thanks to all who deal with obstacles every day, including YOU!

Day 4460: Preparing

I’m in the midst of preparing for my trip to Italy, starting on Sunday.

Preparing for travel includes packing, which I started last night.

Preparing also includes learning about my future destination while also being present, here and now, to deal with many issues at work. Typically, when I am preparing to go away, people prodigiously add to my work load the week before my vacation,

Do you see preparing in my images for today?

On Client’s Day and International Clients Day I’m preparing to work with many clients in individual therapy and group. And after work, I’ll be preparing for my trip with a manicure/pedicure.

Because of cognitive distortions like catastrophizing, I am also preparing for my trip by noticing things that might go wrong, including a sore thumb (from blogging on my phone?), a sensitive tooth, and possible issues with my vision. Part of my preparing also means packing my medication, my portable blood monitor, and injections in case my INR goes too low.

I’m also preparing to visit Rome by watching this video recommended to me by an artist I know:

.

Now I’m preparing for your comments about this post.

Are you preparing for my gratitude?

Day 4266: Catastrophizing

Catastrophizing is second nature to me (and to other humans I know), so I wrote a song about it.

.

That is the live version of “Catastrophizing” that I performed with Nat Shirley at my June 1 concert. Here and now, I am catastrophizing about that video and people’s possible reactions to it. I’m also catastrophizing about downloading such a huge file to my poor old phone.

And please don’t get me started on my catastrophizing about the upcoming USA elections.

Here’s how I’ve been dealing with catastrophizing thoughts lately:

STOP CATASTROPHIZING !!!! IT DOESN’T HELP YOU OR ANYBODY ELSE!

That’s better.

Do you see any cat-astrophizing in my images for today?

.

Is the Daily Bitch catastrophizing? Are you?

Thanks to all who are here for this catastrophizing post, including YOU!

Day 3904: Blame

Today I’m thinking about blame, for too many reasons to name.

Blame is a cognitive distortion which blows things out of proportion.

.

Blame is often the name of the game and it can hurt when people take aim.

Can you see blame in any way in my images for today?

.

If we need something to blame, the Large Hadron Collider is a good provider of same.

.

If blame is something you know, you can leave a comment below.

(The blame for all this rhyming lies in my song-writing focus and timing. )

Hoping to make blame a ghost and toast, I thank you for reading this post!

Day 3873: Lazy

Recently, someone in my Coping and Healing Group called herself “lazy.” Because I’m not lazy about pointing out people’s cognitive distortions, I suggested that she was labeling herself negatively.

This group member, who I never perceive as lazy, looked surprised and shared that she didn’t see “lazy” as a negative label. Because I don’t want to be lazy about letting in different perspectives, I realized that “lazy” could sometimes be positive.

I shall now lazily look up a definition of “lazy.”

.

Because I want to avoid burnout, I think it would behoove me to be more lazy, and why not start on National Lazy Day?

.

I choose to be lazy as I share my other images for today.

.

On National Lazy Day, I shall not explore any of the other National Days.

Here’s what I find when I look for “lazy” on YouTube.

Feel free to be lazy about leaving a comment, below.

Lazy thanks to all who help me blog every day, including YOU!

Day 3797: Escapes

We all need escapes from

Do you see escapes in my images for today?

Here’s what I find when I search for escapes on YouTube:

.

Thanks to all who share in my escapes, including YOU!
