As the weather here turns cool and we approach the midterm elections, I am trying to keep my cool, which was difficult yesterday when Joan the cat suddenly disappeared when I momentarily got distracted when we were outside together and I was inspecting the cool construction work on our home. I lost my cool as I searched for Joan, catastrophizing that I would never see that cool cat again. After many uncool minutes when Joan was uncharacteristically silent while I was calling her, she suddenly popped up, cool as a cucumber (although cats actually are not cool with cucumbers, as you can see here).
Also, my cool yellow Honda Fit with manual transmission has a brand new alternator which travelled all the way from Arkansas to Massachusetts, so now I’m cool about it starting up in the cool mornings. I find it cool and fun to drive a car with a stick shift and I think it’s uncool that they’re phasing out those kinds of cars.
At the end of the day, I did some cool EMDR therapy to help me stay cool while others are losing their cool around me, and my therapist and I came up with a cool positive cognition: “I can trust myself.”
Who are the people who are grabbing your attention now, besides me?
I often grab people’s attention by pointing out that the people who are grabbing our attention are often the difficult ones. They grab our attention because we experience them as a problem, even a danger, and our mind wants to find a “solution” to make our environment safer.
Last night, when I thought I might lose sleep because of people who were grabbing my attention, I tweeted this:
.
This response to that tweet grabbed my attention:
Thank goodness, one person who was grabbing my attention yesterday was my old student, Chris Delyani, writer extraordinaire, who wishes me well and who has previously appeared in this blog (here, here, and here). I hope the word “old” doesn’t grab Chris’s attention in a negative way, because he looks great!
Chris and I grabbed each other’s attention yesterday by reminiscing about when he was a student in my writing section at Boston University in the 1980s. Now he is grabbing people’s attention with his wonderful books.
Chris and I grabbed my husband Michael’s attention when we told the story of how Chris and my other students had graded the printed directions I had given them to find my place for a celebratory party at the end of the semester. Mimicking the way I had graded and commented on their papers, they wrote (among other things):
“These directions were okay — they got us there, but we couldn’t tell how you FELT about it.”
“You show unspeakable talent… C+“
Chris and my other students also grabbed my attention back then by correcting my one spelling mistake on the directions — I wrote “wonderous” instead of “wondrous.” That grabbed my attention so much that I’ve never misspelled that word since.
What grabs your attention in my other images from yesterday and why?
Hey — you seem like a cool cat! That line of work must be very challenging. I admire your consistent, long-running posts, too 🙂 — cmblackwood
Miles Davis for me. He was so cool, if he was alive today global warming wouldn’t be a problem! — Paul S.
Also, fellow WordPresser coffeegrounded did the coolest thing: she honored me with the coolest award (even though I don’t do anything with cool WordPress awards besides appreciating them).
What’s the coolest thing somebody has done for you, lately?
I’m trying to decide what my coolest activity might be, today:
Individual therapy, where I work.
Group therapy, which is the coolest therapy (I believe) because “the more the merrier.”
Getting fitted for a dental device for my sleep apnea, which will be much cooler ( I hope) than the C-Pap and Bi-Pap machines I’ve been using through some coolest and warmest months.
Getting my teeth cleaned, pre-medicating with some cool oral antibiotics rather than the intravenous antibiotics I’ve had to use over many of the coolest years around here, in Massachusetts.
Coolest thanks to cmblackwood, Paul S., coffeegrounded, Gwen Stefani, Alesso, West Side Story, all those who help make my life the coolest, and you — of course! — for being here, now (which is the coolest place to be).
I am so looking forward to flying to California in two days to get warmer.
California will definitely be warmer than Boston, these days.
Here’s an unexpected way I’ve been getting warmer. I’m running another fever.
Sometimes when I’m upset and having catastrophizing thoughts, like “I won’t be able to fly to California on Saturday!” I feel warmer, too.
I’m trying to stay cool about all this, by letting my doctors know, staying home from work today, and letting go of worst-case thinking.
I’ve also been feeling uncool this morning, because none of the photos I took yesterday on my iPhone are loading to my laptop. I thought I’d be getting warmer to fixing that problem by using a new cable, but the photos still won’t load.
That’s okay. I’m staying cool about that, too, by including these never-before-blogged photos, demonstrating how Boston is a long way from getting warmer:
