I write songs
- to help myself and others,
- because I love music,
- for a creative outlet, and
- because lyrics and tunes show up in my brain.
Today, as I’m dealing with issues related to chronic illnesses, I started writing “The Chronic Illness Song.”
When you have a chronic illness
You have to take your pill, yes,
And do other things you may not want to do.

That’s all I have so far, but stay tuned.
Why I write songs is related to why I blog every day: to connect with others through words and imagery.

Maybe I write songs because I’m a curmudgeon, a freethinker, somebody who appreciates the little things (like bubble wrap), and a person who sometimes pushes on a door that says pull.
Here’s what I find when I search for “why I write songs.”

Thanks to all who help me ask and answer questions like “Why do I write songs?” including YOU.

The chronic illness song. Just in time to send to a friend of mine who was just diagnosed with white matter disease, after suffering a seizure. He’s home now, on some meds and has an appointment with a neurologist next week, but we (his wife and I) are worried. He’s also a musician, so a song would be more than appropriate. I’ll keep an eye out for the rest of it. Thank you for being so serendipitous! 🙂
Thank you for being you, Barbara!
I feel like I’m becoming more of a curmudgeon than I used to be. Not sure if I like that.
You’re not alone, Debbie.
I really get the songwriting thing, I write children’s songs with the music teacher in my school, she composes, I write lyrics, and we figure out the style and bingo!
That’s wonderful, beth! 💕
I’ve associated freethinkers with creativity ever since I learned the term from Mark Twain. And while I haven’t reached the point of being able to play a song, never mind writing one, but learning to play the ukulele has had a lot of benefits. I got a boost of confidence when I managed to play an F chord (after thinking my hand was too small), and it’s been a great way to connect with others. Writing songs can do all that too.
I always associate freethinkers with you, my friend.
I’ve been thinking for decades, Ann, that songs occur when things inside have the need to come out.
Great thoughts, my friend.
Your a good song writer Anne! I love listening to and reading the lyrics of your tunes! xo
Thanks so much, Carol anne! That means a lot to me.
