Day 3228: Assumptions

One of my questions on Twitter yesterday had to do with assumptions:

One of my assumptions is that we tend to personalize and blame ourselves way too much. And I assume that people assume every day, as a way to make meaning.

I assume you’ve heard this one: when I assume, I make an ass out of u + me.

Do you see any assumptions in my other images for today?

My assumption is that the Daily Bitch doesn’t like raisins in her ice cream.

I have no assumptions about why today’s National Day Calendar didn’t include Election Day. I also have no assumptions about the Virginia Governor’s race, but I have hopes about the outcome.

Here’s what I find when I search for “assumptions” on YouTube:

I have no assumptions about what comments will show up, below.

You might have an assumption that I’ll end this post with gratitude, because I always do!

  1. What do I suppose I was in a past life? Fictional…

  2. When someone is not listening to me, I assume it is because I am competing with the next thing they are going to say that they are formulating in their own head.

  3. I make an assumption that people are listening when I speak but find that, increasingly, they aren’t. They are already starting to speak over me as their opinion is paramount.

  4. I love the “other people’s opinion” flow chart! I am actively trying to shed the need to be understood/heard by other people. It takes so much energy to care about such things. Baby steps, perhaps, but steps nonetheless! 🙂

  5. I know some people assume Twitter is terrible, but your kind, thoughtful questions and the responses you get could just as easily lead those same people to assume it’s a great place with great people.

  6. i assume that they are occupied by something going on with them, or they are not open, or i am not speaking out loud.

  7. I assume they are caught up in their own things, Ann.

  8. Assumption is like living an illusion that situations are somewhat manageable, logical, and sensible at certain times because it eases facing the ‘unknown’, which makes one uncomfortable. I suppose one can live an entirely life based on assumptions only, rather than rationalize (which is also a defense mechanism) but the former is based on bias or preconceived ideas, while the latter may have slightly stronger connections with reality. Rationalism is the viewpoint that knowledge mostly comes from intellectual reasoning, and empiricism is the viewpoint that knowledge mostly comes from using your senses to observe the world. “Concerning the Existence of Material Things and the Real distinction between Mind and Body”, Descartes mentioned that the body and the soul are not alike and called his thesis “mind-body dualism”.
