Day 3780: Was ist das?

I often ask “was ist das?” in English, so when I saw “was ist das?” yesterday in a Black Forest gift shop …

…I knew what it was: a good title for today’s blog post.

Was ist das? This is my last blog post before my flight back home to Boston after a very enjoyable Viking River Cruise on the Rhine River.

Was ist das? It’s the introduction to another batch of images from that wonderful trip through the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland.

.

Was ist das?

What’s this? It’s goodbye and thanks until tomorrow.

Day 3777: Who do you believe in?

Last night, I asked this question on Twitter:

That question was inspired, I believe, by my meeting Carmen (who believe it or not, shares the birthday of Groundhog Day with me!) and her husband Manny yesterday on the Viking River Tour.

Manny and I discovered that we both loved the song “I Believe in You” from How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and we both believed in our ability to sing it together at the dinner table.

I believe in people’s ability to connect, learn, and grow despite suspicions and fear about difference, and I saw that in a “stumble stone” on a street in the German city of Koblenz.

I believe in The Guardian’s ability to describe stumble stones.

I believe in my ability to put together all the images I collected yesterday to create my 3777th consecutive daily blog.

I believe in the Daily Bitch’s ability to believe in herself.

Who do you believe in? I believe in YOU.

Day 3776: Making the Unseen Visible

Yesterday, when I was at the Ludwig modern art museum in Cologne, Germany, I saw this:

… and I thought, “‘Making the Unseen Visible’ would be a good title for tomorrow’s blog post.”

Before yesterday, Germany had been unseen by me and had taken up visible space in my head as an unsafe place for Jewish people, like me. But yesterday, making the unseen Germany visible helped replace some of my old fears and assumptions with visible humanity and shared experience.

Actually, as I’m creating this blog post, the images are loading but are not visible to me, which is a first in my 10 years of daily blogging. Let’s see if I’ll be making the unseen visible with my other images for today.

Thanks to all who are making the unseen visible by expressing their thoughts and feelings, including you!
