Day 4035: RAIN

Tara Brach, the author of Radical Acceptance and Radical Compassion, talks about the healing power of RAIN — an acronym with components I have trouble remembering.

I’ve been sharing RAIN with my therapy groups lately and I’m pretty sure, here and now, that R stands for Recognize (rather than Realize) , A stands for Allow (not Accept or Awareness), I stands for Investigate (not Interrogate), and N stands for Nurture (not Nourish).

Today, I’m going to Recognize that I am aging into my 70s, Allow for all that brings, Investigate how that affects me, and Nurture myself with self care and love.

I am also going to Recognize that many people support Donald Trump, Allow myself to have feelings about that, Investigate how that manifests in my mind and body, and Nourish myself with self care and love.

I don’t know if I’m using RAIN exactly correctly, but I am going to Recognize that I get scared when I think I’m doing something wrong, Allow all my feelings and reactions to that, Investigate how that affects my life, and Nurture myself with self care and love.

Do you see RAIN in my images for today?

Is the Daily Bitch practicing RAIN?

Here’s what I find when I search for RAIN on YouTube:

Day 4033: Warmth

During the cold days of winter, I’m looking for warmth.

I don’t find any warmth in the news or in forecasts about the future. However, I do find warmth in watching episodes of The Yorkshire Vet and in caring connections with others.

Do you see warmth in any of my images for today?

.

I’m looking forward to warmth from my EMDR therapist at 3 PM and a concert with Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard at 7:30, despite the forecasted frigid temperatures.

Here’s what I find when I search for “warmth” on YouTube.

.

After that finished playing, YouTube chose to share the warmth of Tara Brach with me in this video:

Warm thanks to all who help me create warmth in this daily blog, including YOU!

Day 3249: What are you reading?

What are you reading, besides this blog?

I’m reading this …

… and finding it very helpful, including this excerpt:

The words I remember were: The boundary to what we can accept is the boundary to our freedom. During the silence that followed, memories flashed through my mind revealing how much I had been defended against. I could feel the walls I had erected to keep out those people who were different from me, those who intimidated me or demanded too much from me. I recognized my aversion to physical discomfort, to feeling fear and loneliness. I realized how unforgiving I felt toward myself for hurting others, for being judging, obsessive, selfish.

What are you reading into that and the other images in today’s post?

.

I’m reading into people’s responses these days that there is a great need for grieving and healing.

This is what I find on YouTube when I search for “what are you reading?”

I look forward to reading your comments, below.

Thanks to all who read this blog, including YOU!

Day 3245: Radical Acceptance

Radical acceptance is

  • something I first heard about when I was facilitating DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) groups in the 90s,
  • defined online (see link, above) as “when you stop fighting reality, stop responding with impulsive and destructive behaviors when things aren’t going the way you want them to, and let go of bitterness that might be keeping you trapped in a cycle of suffering,”
  • the title of at least one of my previous blog posts, and
  • this book by Tara Brach, which was recommended to me by one of my patients.

I’ve been trying to practice radical acceptance of the past and of the present — especially the things I can’t control — which helps me feel more ready to meet the future.

Do you see radical acceptance in any of my other images for today?

I am practicing radical acceptance about differences of opinion. For example, I don’t like carbonated beverages with caffeine and I don’t like to play Monopoly, and that’s okay!

Here’s what I find on YouTube when I search for “radical acceptance”:

What are your thoughts and feelings about radical acceptance? Whatever they are, please accept my gratitude for visiting my blog, here and now.
