Day 4034: Concerts

I’ve seen a lot of great concerts in my long life, including Miles Davis, Steely Dan, Pat Metheny, Johnny Hartman, Bonnie Raitt, Chick Corea, Paul Simon, Ahmad Jamal, Los Lobos, Sting, Todd Rundgren, Wayne Shorter, Weird Al Yankovic, and many others.

As I prepare for a concert of my own original songs (!), I went to a concert last night of two wonderful singers and human beings: Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken.

.

Ruben and Clay, who obviously love each other, showed a lot of love for the audience by inviting us to sing along, dance, and even take pictures and videos. Here’s a little snippet of last night’s concert:

.

Ruben and Clay are not only superb singers but also warm, funny, and very engaging performers.

Sitting next to me at the concert were Ashleigh (who has loved Clay for 20 years) and her husband Adam, who prefers punk rock concerts.

As you can see, Adam is all in on Ruben and Clay. Ashleigh and I reminisced about the Clay concerts we’ve been to, and the very cold weather last night reminded me of driving in a dangerous snow storm many years ago to hear Clay sing Christmas songs. Ashleigh told me she was supposed to go to that concert but she was too young to drive, and her mother refused to take her, saying, “I am not going to risk killing us just so you can see Clay Aiken.” Ashleigh said she cried herself to sleep and I told her, “If I had known, I would have come by to get you.” I also showed Ashleigh and Adam this photo of me on a Broadway stage with Clay when he was in Spamalot …

… and they were very impressed.

Late last night I asked this question about concerts on Twitter:

.

Here are my other images for today’s “Concerts” post:

.

Apparently, I’m not too goddamn old for concerts.

I love concerts with great singers, so here is Clay with the amazing Hannah Waddingham:

Day 3924: Reactions

Every time I get a COVID shot, I get strong reactions including fevers, aches, and exhaustion. Those reactions didn’t prevent me from getting a shot yesterday, so I’m expecting unpleasant reactions today.

This is the first time I’ve gotten a COVID shot on a Friday (instead of a Wednesday), so at least my reactions won’t interfere with work. My planned reactions for today are to veg out in my pajamas, watch movies I love, and complain.

Do you see reactions in my images for today?

.

My planned reactions for today include neither chewing gum nor yoga, but I’ll do my best to love people even when I’m feeling lousy.

Here’s what I find on YouTube when I search for “reactions.”

.

You can imagine my reactions when I met Jackie Chan in the 90s. In case your reactions to that video included, “what the heck is ‘parkour’?”, here you go:

.

Feel free to find the way through to sharing your reactions to this post, below.

My reactions, no matter what, include gratitude, so thanks to all who help me create these daily posts, including YOU!

Day 3322: Celebrity Encounters

Last night I asked this question on Twitter:

Somebody described a nice encounter with David Letterman, who had a segment on his Late Night show about celebrity encounters called “Brush with Greatness.”

My celebrity encounters include talking to Jackie Chan in L.A., interviewing Gary Burton in a promotional video for Berklee College of Music, meeting Pete Buttigieg in Boston, being on stage in Spamalot on Broadway (with Clay Aiken and other cast members singing to me), and getting winked at by Art Buchwald at the Washington D.C. airport in the early 70’s.

Do you see any celebrity encounters in the images I’m sharing today?

I love my daily celebrity encounters with the Daily Bitch calendar.

Here’s the Spamalot celebrity cast I saw on Broadway in 2008:

Thanks to all the celebrities who are encountering this blog, here and now, including YOU.

Day 1679: If I knew then what I know now

If I knew then what I know my blog post topic is now, would I have taken different photos yesterday?

If I knew then what I know now about how expensive everything is in 2017, I would have worked harder to get lots of money.

If I knew in 2008 when I got the Arthur Award for “Best Peasant” in Spamalot on Broadway (starring Clay Aiken) …

… what I know now — that my son Aaron’s cousin Victoria would be in Spamalot at the Regent Theater in Arlington Massachusetts today ….

… would I have felt any different about being on stage back then?

I often hear people say, “If I knew then what I know now”  when they judge and deprecate their past decisions. If knew then what I know now about addressing those regrets about the past, I would have always replied

You were doing the best you could at the time with the knowledge you had then.

For example, if we knew then what we know now about our new dining room table:

—  that is,  how putting certain placemats on it would cause a weird residue to form on the finish — we would have paid money for the extra insurance protecting any future problems. However, because that insurance did NOT cover damage done by cats, we assumed we wouldn’t need it.

If I knew when I booked my trip to Edinburgh, Scotland that real cats would be appearing on stage at the Regent Theater on Labor Day weekend …

… I might have booked an earlier return date.

If people who have pets knew then what they know now …

… they might have made different purchasing decisions.

If we all knew then what we know now, we might always look on the bright side of life.

I knew then and I know now that I always like to end with thanks to those who help me create these daily blogs and — of course! — to you, for all you know.
