Fulfilling my daily obligation of blogging for over thirteen years, I’m pretty sure I’ve written about obligations before.
Now I feel an obligation to check that out.
Yes! Here is a previous post on obligations, from my third year of blogging.
I feel an obligation to tell you to click on the link in the paragraph above if you want to access that blog post, which highlights a group therapy session. Another obligation I just fulfilled was checking my math to make sure that the post was really from my third year of blogging.
Obligations that take a moment to fulfill are very different than those that take hours. And because I’m very aware of my own mortality, I often consider getting out of those more time-consuming obligations. My sense of obligation is so strong, though, that I spend a lot of time going back on forth about what to do about those obligations.
What’s an obligated person to do? Happily fulfill my obligation of sharing today’s images.

Here’s an obligation I am honored to fulfill today — sharing this appearance of Dr. Martin Luther King on Meet the Press in 1965, which includes a discussion of moral obligations.

Thanks to all who are here for this obligations post, including YOU!

I have taken on the obligation of calling my high school BFF in Maine once a month. And every month I schedule it for a weekday and always end up putting it off until the weekend. Not because I don’t want to talk with her, but because we always talk for at least an hour and sometimes I think I just don’t have time – like I’m so crowded with activities and other obligations at 99% of 83. This month, even though I had promised myself I would do something else, I called her on Sunday and, as usual, I am always glad I did. We have so much fun talking that the time just flies by. And yes, it was over an hour. But it’s a far, far better obligation than doing the dishes!
Some obligations are good for our souls, Barbara.
I didn’t feel obligated to go reread your blog post from ten years ago but I was glad I did. There are no rules with blogging. Everyone figures out what works for them. It was interesting seeing how much of what worked for you then still works for you now.
I never feel obligated to read your blog posts either, my friend, and I am always so grateful when I do.
Blogging for 13 years, wow! Cool! I’m glad you kept up that obligation!
It’s a pleasure, Carol Anne! 💙
