Day 4389: Appearances

Self esteem is very often connected to appearances.

Through my appearances in therapy groups, I encourage people to disconnect their sense of self worth from their appearances, practicing unconditional self love NOW.

From all appearances, that is very difficult to do in a culture so obsessed with appearances.

What do you notice about appearances in my images appearing here today?

.

Here’s what appears when I search for “appearances” on YouTube:

.

That reminds me of my aunt suggesting I get a nose job when I was young and other thoughts and feelings I’ve had about my various appearances at different ages. I appreciate YiWen Fan’s conclusions about appearances, including letting go of comparisons.

Thanks to all who are making appearances here, now, including YOU!

  1. the older I’ve gotten the less I care about appearances, not in a ‘not taking care of myself way’ but instead, not worrying about what other people think about me

I remember the days when I used to use a hair curler (before I started getting perms), eye liner, mascara, eyebrow pencil, everything except lipstick (I bite my lips). And always checked the mirror before going out. At some point I stopped getting perms (anybody here remember Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?) and just got shoulder length cuts, and not too long after that I stopped wearing makeup at all. Can’t see to put it on without my glasses, can’t put it on with my glasses. You see the problem. Now I rarely if ever even check the mirror at any time. It simply doesn’t matter anymore. I did discover that I take a better picture if I smile. My smile seems to take over for hair and makeup, and I’m happy about that. It makes me smile. 🙂

  3. I’m not interested in judging people by their appearances but I will say that pizza looks delicious.
