Day 4174: Not to brag

Many of us have been taught not to brag.

Those teachings about not to brag often result in people putting themselves down for fear of being conceited or overstating their worth.

Not to brag, but I encourage people to brag about themselves, because I think that is much healthier than their usual self-deprecation.

Not to brag, but I did a concert of my original songs where I got a standing ovation and raised hundreds of dollars for Samaritans and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Not to brag, but my son wants to travel with me this summer, and we’re hoping to take a train trip across Canada.

Not to brag, but I captured all these images at home.

.

Not to brag, but I have some pretty cool eyewear.

Not to brag, but my friend Janet Raye Stevens — who is a fabulous writer whom I met at film school in the 1980s — sent me that photo after she attended my concert.

Here’s what I find when I search for “not to brag” on YouTube.

Not to brag, but I found a really good TED talk about bragging.

Not to brag, but many awesome people read this blog, including YOU!

  1. did you ever play with the rolling bones!, cheers annie, enjoy good health, amen

  2. what you did was brave and huge and a gift to the bigger world. brag on!

  3. love the photo and happy Janet Day, Janet! ♥️🩵♥️

  4. Jon Goat@goatsupplies I’m with you. Or I wish you could take me with you when you go. Long a dream of mine. Now, sadly, out of reach. But feel free to boast about it here!

I guess I can boast about my smile. An old guy on a bar stool once told me, “When you smile, that’s when the lights go on.” And you know, he’s right. After many years of trying to look serious or sardonic or even mysterious in photographs – resulting in some awful looking pictures – now I just light up, and the pics come out fine. Hoo gnu?

A train trip across Canada sounds wonderful! And how terrific that your son wants to travel with you. I often said that one of my goals with raising my children was that they would still want to talk to me and be with me on the other side of adolescence, which is what did indeed happen. And for you too!

  6. A train trip really does sound great. Not to brag but I would happily take a train trip anywhere.

  7. Sharon

  8. Wow, travelling with your son!!! That is the best. I would love to see you
