Day 3326: A lot of anxiety

I see a lot of anxiety in the people I encounter, these days, and also in myself.

The last two nights I had a lot of anxiety dreams — about my patients, my son, and a presentation I’m giving about groups next week.

I probably don’t need to be anxious about anything, but it’s difficult to tell our minds to stop being anxious or to stop worrying about the future. Just yesterday, I talked to a patient about the technique of scheduling worry.

Scheduling worry works like this: (1) You set aside a time for worry (e.g., Tuesday at 5:30 PM), (2) Put “worry” in your schedule, (3) when worry comes up, you tell yourself, “Nope! I’ll worry later at [the scheduled time], and (4) when the scheduled time comes, worry as hard as you can.

When there’s a lot of anxiety, it helps to contain it. And I hope it helps to know you’re not alone.

The Daily Bitch has a lot of anxiety today.

.

Do you see a lot of anxiety in my other images for today?

A lot of people have a lot of anxiety about the Internet.

I don’t have a lot of anxiety about finding something relevant and helpful when I search YouTube for “a lot of anxiety.”

Do you ever have a lot of anxiety? If so, what helps to reduce it, even just a little?

I may have a lot of anxiety sometimes, but I also have a lot of gratitude for those who help me lower my anxiety every day with this blog, including you!

Day 3325: Vivid memories

I have many vivid memories of the Olympics, so I asked this question on Twitter last night:

People’s vivid memories ran the gamut of tragedy to triumph, including the killing of the Israeli athletes in Munich 1972, the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” USA-Soviet Union hockey game, John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s raised fists on the podium in 1968, Muhammad Ali lighting the Olympic flame in Atlanta 1996, and many incredible gymnasts, skaters, runners, jumpers, skiers, divers, swimmers, fighters, and other vividly memorable athletes.

Will this blog post evoke any vivid memories for you?

Another vivid memory, thanks to the Daily Bitch calendar.

Here’s what I find on YouTube when I search for “vivid memories Olympics.”

More than one person on Twitter cited k.d. lang’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in the Vancouver 2010 opening ceremony as a vivid Olympics memory.

Vivid thanks to all who share vivid memories, including YOU.

Day 3324: Lame

Yesterday on Twitter, somebody made a lame remark implying that this tweet of mine was lame:

The lame comment was something like “Songs to drown out his owners boring questions.” While I felt momentarily lamed by such a response, I refocused my attention to the hundreds of great responses, like these:

It’s lame how one negative response can drown out hundreds of positive ones, but the human mind can be lame like that. That’s why it’s not lame and also very helpful to consciously focus on the positive.

How lame are my other images for today?

Some people on Twitter think it’s lame that I post the National Days every day. The vast majority, though, seem to like that. So Happy Lame Duck Day!

I did a virtual Open Mic on Friday, but I was so lame, I forgot to push the record button on Zoom before my performance. I hope it’s not lame that I recorded myself doing the “Wedding Song” from Hadestown yesterday and posted it on YouTube.

You might be afraid of making a lame remark in the comments section below, but that’s impossible.

Thanks to all those who help other people realize that they are not lame, including YOU.

Day 3323: I’m big enough to have options

In my EMDR therapy, we have identified a very powerful “positive cognition.”

I’m big enough to have options.

This helps me because when I’m lost, anxious, frightened, or helpless, I feel small — probably because (1) I was traumatized by hospital stays and major surgeries when I was a kid and (2) I’m only 5’3” tall.

Also, it always helps to know I have options.

Here and now, I’m big enough to have options about what I share in today’s blog.

I’m big enough to have options to shower with a friend, have ice cream or Nutella whenever I want, play outside or inside, pay attention to or ignore weatherpeople, and avoid bacon because (1) my parents kept Kosher and (2) I associate the smell of bacon with my childhood stays in the hospital.

Let’s see what options I find when I search YouTube for “I’m big enough to have options.”

I’m big enough to have options about how to express gratitude to all who help me create this daily blog, including YOU.

Day 3322: Celebrity Encounters

Last night I asked this question on Twitter:

Somebody described a nice encounter with David Letterman, who had a segment on his Late Night show about celebrity encounters called “Brush with Greatness.”

My celebrity encounters include talking to Jackie Chan in L.A., interviewing Gary Burton in a promotional video for Berklee College of Music, meeting Pete Buttigieg in Boston, being on stage in Spamalot on Broadway (with Clay Aiken and other cast members singing to me), and getting winked at by Art Buchwald at the Washington D.C. airport in the early 70’s.

Do you see any celebrity encounters in the images I’m sharing today?

I love my daily celebrity encounters with the Daily Bitch calendar.

Here’s the Spamalot celebrity cast I saw on Broadway in 2008:

Thanks to all the celebrities who are encountering this blog, here and now, including YOU.

Day 3321: National Optimist Day

In honor of National Optimist Day, this optimist is going to share some quotes about optimists and optimism.

Because I’m an optimist, I believed that my birthday yesterday would turn out well despite some challenges, including a mysteriously missing game of Sorry. I went to two different Target stores in the morning, optimistically believing I would find that favorite childhood game, and my optimism paid off.

Even though I’m an optimist, I didn’t expect to win both games of Sorry I played with my husband Michael and my son, Aaron, but I did!

What would an optimist see in the rest of my images for today?

Here’s Dame Kiri Te Kanawa singing “Cockeyed Optimist” from South Pacific:

Optimistic thanks to all optimists reading this blog, including YOU.

Day 3320: Groundhog Day 2022

On 2/2/22, I have 22K followers on Twitter and I’m celebrating my 22 + 47th birthday!

My plan for Groundhog Day 2022 is to take the day off from work; spend it with my husband, my son, and our two cats; play our annual game of Sorry; eat flourless chocolate cake with whipped cream; read; take a walk; listen to music; and practice this song on the ukulele:

Two days after Groundhog Day, I’ll be performing that song at a remote Open Mic.

I was able to catch, live, the Groundhog’s prediction for 2022:

Of course, commercials almost ruin that, but the prediction is there (and no surprise).

Can you see evidence of Groundhog Day in my other images for today?

Because of the rare heart condition I was born with, I’ve never been a girl or woman in sports. However, if you can’t play a sport, be a sport, which I guess I am.

How are you going to celebrate Groundhog Day 2022?

I’m going to express my gratitude to all those who have been there for me during Groundhog Day(s), including YOU!

Day 3319: The day before

On the day before my 69th birthday, I’m sharing some images from the day before this one.

Soon it will be the night before my birthday, so here’s “The Night Before” by the Beatles.

I’m grateful I’ve reached the day before yet another birthday and I’m grateful for you!
