Day 4387: What we can do

When we’re feeling discouraged and powerless, it helps to focus on what we can do (instead of what we can’t do).

Because yesterday was National CanDo Day, I could ask this question on Twitter:

.

I can say that it always helps me to connect to others and get different perspectives.

I can take pictures of Joan, right now, and share them with you.

.

Also, even though I’m still having problems with congestion and with my phone, I can share today’s observances …

.

… and search for “what we can do” on YouTube.

.

What we can do is try to understand ourselves and others, as Sally Kohn is doing in her great TED talk What we can do about the culture of hate.

What we can do is express gratitude for the important people in our lives, including YOU.

Day 4132: All time favorites

I got to see one of my all time favorite musicians last night — the incredible Jacob Collier.

One of my all time favorite musical experiences is being in a giant audience chorus directed by a joyful, creative, and generous genius.

Because I don’t know if any of my photos will load today, I know this post will be one of my all time favorites if I also share this:

.

One of my all time favorite ways of approaching life is to keep trying, despite obstacles, holding out hope for the best, so let’s see if my photos load today!

Yay!
After an upsetting experience yesterday, I went to Sephora and met Mary Kate! She is now one of my all time favorite beauty consultants.
Here are two of my all time favorite Jacob Collier fans — Aija and her son Daniel.
Aija told me about their involvement in many musical, artistic, and other creative endeavors, including the Baltic Film Festival.
Aija also showed me a picture of her all time favorite kitten.

.

After I got home from one of my all time favorite concerts, I asked a question about all time favorites on Twitter.

One of my all time favorite things to do on Twitter is to share the Daily Holidays.

.

Let’s see if today’s Daily Bitch is one of my all time favorites…

Nah. But this is one of my all time favorites:

.

Thanks to Jacob Collier, Mary Kate, Daniel, Aija, my friends on Twitter, the Daily Bitch, cool cats, and my all time favorite readers, including YOU!!

Day 3644: Adapting

Yesterday, as I was adapting to …

  • being back on-call for mental health crises throughout the hospital’s primary care practice,
  • health insurance barriers to my own primary care practitioner’s easy coordination with medical specialists in different facilities,
  • difficulty getting a prescription filled at my local pharmacy,
  • a huge bill for the ambulance that took me to a hospital in Georgia after I had a T.I.A. (or mini-stroke) during my vacation in September,
  • new advice about our months-long shower remodel,
  • technological glitches as I was facilitating two remote therapy groups,
  • more unexpected changes at Twitter, and
  • countless other curve balls in the baseball game of life,

… I witnessed many people adapting creatively to their own life challenges, in my therapy groups and elsewhere.

Do you see adapting in my images for today?

As usual, I appreciate the Daily Bitch’s strategies for adapting.

Here’s what I find when I search for “adapting” on YouTube:

I also find this:

Thanks to all who help with my adapting to every new day, including YOU.

Day 3427: Inspired

I am inspired by many things, including

  • hope,
  • kindness,
  • courage,
  • veterans,
  • honesty,
  • survival,
  • growth,
  • creativity,
  • authenticity,
  • music,
  • nature,
  • memories,
  • humor, and
  • others’ stories.

Perhaps that’s why I was inspired to capture this image yesterday:

I am now inspired to show you the whole picture which, honestly, made me laugh.

I am inspired that Chobani came up with a new way to describe limitations. When I showed this new yogurt yesterday to my husband Michael, he was inspired to laugh and say “no limes.” I was inspired to reply, “ no pie.”

Are you inspired by any of my other images for today?

Now I’m inspired to share the song “Hole in My Bucket.

I am inspired by Odetta and Harry Belafonte.

What are you inspired by?

I am inspired by gratitude every day, so thanks to all who inspire and are inspired, including YOU.

Day 2012: It’s Not Me

“It’s Not Me” says my t-shirt, made by me.

Yesterday, when I was wearing that t-shirt, somebody asked me, “Who is it?” and I didn’t have an answer.

Apparently, it’s not me this morning. My laptop computer is inexplicably dead, dead, dead and I am calm, calm, calm, despite my usual panic about such things.

If it’s not me, who is it? Perhaps it’s somebody who finally realizes that fear and panic solve nothing.

It’s not me in my other photos from yesterday.

It’s now me pointing out that my laptop was working perfectly well last night before we watched the Boston fireworks from our home.

It’s not me who can fix an Apple laptop, so I’ll be consulting some expert today.

It is me who is the expert on my own experience; it’s not me who is the expert on computer technology (even though I used to be a technical writer).

It’s not me who prefers to blog on my phone; it is me who overcomes obstacles to do what’s important to me.

It’s not me who is singing this …

… but it is me who will be performing my second original song at an Open Mic tomorrow night.

It’s not me who said “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life” but it is me who has gratitude, here and now, for all who helped me create today’s post and — of course! — for YOU.

Day 1212: Purpose

On purpose, I took this photo yesterday:

IMG_1091

What are your first associations with the word “Purpose”?

When I take photos, it’s more intuitive than purposeful. But I purposely have faith that each of the photos will serve a purpose in this blog.

IMG_1085

One of my co-workers sent me those, on purpose, through the office mail. I think her purpose was to amuse me and to connect with our mutual love of cats and experience of the local weather.

IMG_1087

I purposefully took that picture of my co-worker Megan’s white board.  Megan wrote that with the purpose of helping people improve their self-care.

I took those two photos with the purpose of documenting that THERE WERE NO MATZO BALLS in the hospital’s Matzo Ball soup when Megan and I went to lunch.

IMG_1092

I purposely took that photo of a Mongolian Lamb Stool because:

  1. I’d never seen anything like that before,
  2. We’re going to the Sheep Festival this Saturday,
  3. I believed some of my readers might like it, and
  4. I thought it was funny.

On purpose, I just linked that last line to an old blog post, because that finally answers a question I posed two years ago, which nobody here ever guessed. Sometimes it takes a while to fulfill a purpose.

IMG_1093

My purpose in taking that photo was that I believe we’re here to help each other, for free.

IMG_1095

My purpose in taking and sharing that photo is that I like to  celebrate communities everywhere.

My purpose in taking those photos is to share some things I love seeing these days.

IMG_1099

My purpose in taking that last photo of the day was to show that

  • things can happen — on purpose or not — to slow us down or even stop us for a while and
  • with purpose, we can overcome obstacles, especially with help from others.

I hope this post isn’t falling flat, because that is neither my intent nor my purpose.

On purpose, I now show this photo again

IMG_1087

to purposefully introduce some music I was singing yesterday:

I’ve been including music by Prince in this blog lately, on purpose.

While it’s not my purpose to write this blog to elicit comments, I hope you express yourself purposefully in the comment section, below.

Purposeful thank to all who helped me create today’s post and to you — of course! — no matter what your purpose is for joining me here and now.
