Day 4956: Coincidences

I love coincidences.

Yesterday, when I was on the ferry to work, a woman I had never met before admired my earrings. Coincidentally, she and I both enjoy talking to strangers and we quickly discovered a truly amazing coincidence.

We were both wearing the same socks! That seemed like an especially amazing coincidence because I rarely wear those socks and have never worn them to work before.

Here’s Christine …

… and here are just some of the coincidences: Christine and I both play the ukulele, write songs (including protest songs), live one house away from the ocean in the same city, are therapists, have one son we had in our 40s, love adventure and cats, and freely give hugs.

I’m sure Christine and I will discover more coincidences in the future.

I love coincidences so much that I asked a question about them last night on social media.

.

Do you see coincidences in my other images for today?

What a coincidence! My husband does the cooking AND the cleaning.

When Christine and I were discussing coincidences, she told me about the film Quincy Jaws …

… which she appears in along with many other fellow Quincy residents. I’m assuming there are planned coincidences with the original Jaws, but let’s find out.

I think Christine is coincidentally called Chrissie and appears in the first few minutes of the movie.

Here’s what I find when I search for “coincidences” on YouTube:

.

By coincidence, today I happen to have many ways to express my gratitude to you!

    Hi Ann,

Been awhile since I have commented. It has been a busy summer..
    Two coincidences:
    1) Circa 1992. My wife (then girlfriend) and I driving when my car cuts out. I pull over to the side of the road and open the hood to see and fix the issue. A NY State Trooper pulls behind us. I hear him get out of the car but I did not look because I was busy fixing my car. My wife greeted him and I hear him ask “Did that guy play football at <<our high school>>?” I heard my wife answer Yes before I could get from under the hood. Sure enough, I spent four years blocking for running backs, and there stood one of them looking at me under his Statie Hat.
    2) 2022. Just coming out of COVID back to the office. We were still using the social distancing schedule so I am alone in the office. A person using a security badge walks in and asked, “Hey, can you print this for me?” as he handed me a thumb drive. Sure. I plug the drive into the printer and let it rip. While the doc is printing, we start talking. He said “Let me ask you something. Where are you from?” “Upstate NY” Yeah but where. I name an area “Okay but where? Where did you go to school?” Well, if you really must know, I grew up on a farm just outside of town and went to <<high school>>. “Oh okay, I grew up on Road and went to the neighboring district.” We literally grew up maybe 2 miles from one another. He works in one division and I work in another division of the same office.

  2. That is so fun and cosmic!

Loved this column!!! The coincidences are amazing. The other day I was talking to my sister and we both  were talking about coincidences. These things happen to her all the time. I guess my big coincidence is I was talking with a man

I guess my experience was more serendipity than coincidence. I’ve had lots of serendipitous experiences. Must have had coincidences too, but I can’t think of one.

From AI: Coincidence and serendipity are not the same.

    • Coincidence refers to events occurring at the same time or place without any apparent connection WikiDiff+1.
    • Serendipity, on the other hand, is an unexpected and fortunate discovery or event that happens by chance, often leading to beneficial outcomes WikiDiff+1.

  6. I also have a ukulele-related coincidence. I was practicing in a room on a college campus. A theology class was meeting there later. A woman came in and told me her father loved the ukulele. That was nice. Another woman came in and told me she played too. A third woman came in and told me she taught herself to play the ukulele to relieve work stress. A fourth woman came in and told me she not only played but had her own woodworking shop where she made a ukulele.
None of them knew the others played. What are the odds?

  7. What a lovely story! The matching socks made me smile. It’s amazing how one small conversation can uncover so many unexpected connections. I enjoyed reading this.

My coincidence story is that, in my teens, I went on a trip to Los Angeles with my family (accompanying my dad on a business trip). One evening, we attended a baseball game at Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers were playing the Phillies (my hometown team at the time). I don’t remember who won, but I do remember that when we returned to our hotel and waited for an elevator to our room, the doors of the elevator opened and out walked our neighbor from around the corner back home. Neither of us knew that the other family was planning to be in LA. 🙂
