Day 4211: New Conversations

On New Conversations Day, which was yesterday, I had conversations with people about doing something new: staying off of others’ emotional roller coasters.

In these new conversations, I suggested to my empathic patients that instead of going along for the ride in the car with somebody else’s ups and downs, that instead they visualize standing on the ground beside that roller coaster with their feet on the ground while keeping track of the other person’s ride. That way, they could be present with the other person while also taking care of themselves. I also recommended this grounded technique for experiencing the constant up-and-down roller coaster of the news.

Do you see other new conversations in today’s blog post?

.

Maybe I’ll have some new conversations about baldness, barbershop music, and beans n’ franks today.

When I search for “new conversations” on YouTube, I am very happy to find that album by one of my favorite jazz pianists:

.

I look forward to new conversations in the comments section below.

Thanks to all who are open to new conversations, including YOU!

  1. I used to work in a gift shop that sind greeting cards. I loved matching the errant envelopes to cards. I’ve stopped stocking up on cards these days- but a good conversation starter would be an unexpected card in the mail.

  2. Sind must have been a blending of sold/send. Not sure where the i came into the equation? Feel free to edit

  3. With my dear wife Karen working a Monday-to-Thursday schedule, Ann, our new conversational dialogue on that first of her three days off has taken to calling it “First Saturday.” So today we will enjoy “Second Saturday,” formerly known as plain, old Saturday.

I had a delightful conversation with a representative from WI’s Food Share program, in which she got me back into the program without a hitch. I’m going shopping for food today!

  5. olive had quite the conversation with me today, on our return from her annual vet visit. she did have a mani/pedi clipping so i was hoping it would seem more spa like to her, but that was not the case.

  6. I was sad to hear Dr. Ruth Westheimer died today. I think her advice prompted a lot of useful conversations, especially ones people didn’t always want to have but needed to have during the AIDS crisis.

  7. All good conversations to be having Anne! I hope your weekend was awesome!
