Day 3778: Normal

It’s not normal for me to be trying to read German but it is normal for me to take a picture of something I assume is going to be interesting, like this:

It is normal for me to try to understand people, no matter what the language, so I asked Google to translate.

When normal doesn’t work, we have to figure out what will. Is normal working in my other images for today?

It shouldn’t be normal for an entire community to be wiped out, but unfortunately that was normal for Germany in the 1930s. Sometimes we need a new normal, desperately.

It’s normal for me to end these blog posts with gratitude, and today is no exception.

  1. Love the tshirt

  2. Even the cat seems German to me, Ann.

  3. There are people – probably the vast majority of the population – who my daughter and I refer to as “normies.” We know to behave slightly differently around them.

As for reading German, my high school German got me as far as knowing that the information placard was describing a mikva (some of the little I know of Jewish culture) and that the water was not for hygiene but for “ritual.” How did I do?

  4. I find it funny that part of the new normal is you can have a dish of a corn tortilla with tomato sauce in Germany. Fifty years ago that would have been unusual. A century ago it would have been unheard of. A thousand years ago it would have been impossible.

  5. Great images of the SchPIRA Museum and the Speyer Cathedral. The new normal is that the iPhone is more capable than ever. I really like the images Ann!

  6. Proof that normal can also be very special!

  7. The t shirt caught my attention as I’m studying German lol. Love it. Other photos are great x
