Day 2627: Comfort Plan

I think most of us need a comfort plan these days, so I was glad to see this in my hospital room yesterday:

IMG_2233

How would you fill in your own personal comfort plan?  For me, it’s connecting and communicating with people I love …

Part of my comfort plan is to express gratitude, every day.

Day 2626: No one asked for this

Yesterday, after I published my breaking news post, I discovered I had cold symptoms and a slight fever.

Worried that I might have caught the coronavirus (which no one asked for) during the week-long group therapy conference in NYC, I informed my manager and my doctors. Because of my risk factors (over 60 years old, chronic heart issues), the doctors decided they would test me for the virus if my temperature went above 100.4. Also, because I’ve gotten endocarditis (a dangerous inflammation of the heart which I also never asked for) three times in my life, I usually ask to get tested for that whenever I run a fever.

No one asked for this, but I stayed home from work, watched TV, monitored my temperature, and took photos of more breaking news which nobody asked for.

I also caught up on the Stephen Colbert shows I had missed last week. I took a photo of this …

… thinking “my next blog post will probably be titled ‘No one asked for this.'”

No one asked for the coronavirus outbreak. Also, no one asked for me to run a fever of 100.6 in the evening, which I did.

When I reported my fever to my medical team, they asked me to go to the Emergency Room, another thing I’ve never asked for. I asked if I could finish the delicious salmon dish Michael had cooked for me first.

They asked me to wear a mask to the Emergency Room. Since I didn’t have a mask, they asked me to wear a scarf around my face. I asked Michael to accompany me to the Emergency Room.

They tested me for many things, including the flu and endocarditis. I certainly didn’t ask to be admitted to the hospital overnight, but the Emergency Room doctor didn’t like my oxygen levels.

No one asked for this, but here are more photos from yesterday.

No one asked for this, but they think I might have pneumonia. Whether or not you ask for this, I’ll give you more updates in my next post.

No one asked for my gratitude, but I give it willingly, every day.

Day 2625: Breaking News

One thousand, three hundred, and fifteen days ago, when my son received his unconditional acceptance to the University of Edinburgh, I published my one other post with today’s title.

Because of current breaking news, unconditional acceptance seems more difficult to attain.

Day 2624: Get Seen, Be Loved

Yesterday, when I arrived back in Boston, I saw two signs that summed up my experience at the American Group Psychotherapy Association annual conference, Connect 2020.

IMG_2199

IMG_2200

Getting seen and being loved, to me,  beautifully expresses the healing power of groups.

These recent photos are waiting to get seen and be loved.

For the second day in a row, I want the late, great McCoy Tyner to get seen and be loved here.

As always, I am grateful to all who help me get seen and be loved, every day.

Day 2623: We really don’t know how we affect other people

Two thousand, five hundred, and five days ago (but who’s counting?), I wrote another blog post with the same title as this one.

We really don’t know how we affect other people.

Rhys — the welcoming, perceptive, kind, aware, attentive, versatile, soulful, generous,  and lovable server at Junior’s restaurant in New York City — really didn’t know how he affected me until I published yesterday’s blog post (and today’s!).

I really didn’t know how I affected Rhys until he showed me his instagram account yesterday and asked to get some pictures with me yesterday.

I’ve encountered so many people during my experience at this year’s American Group Psychotherapy Association conference. They really don’t know how they affected me, which was profoundly.

Perhaps McCoy Tyner, the incredible jazz pianist who died yesterday, didn’t really know how he affected other people.  Here‘s one of the most affecting pieces of music I’ve ever heard (performed live in Berlin in 1990):

Here‘s the recording of “Fly with the Wind” which has affected me for decades:

Here‘s another incredible piece from the same album:

We really don’t know how we affect other people unless we tell each other. I want to tell you how I grateful I am for all of you, every day.

Day 2622: I’m glad you exist

I’m glad you exist.

I’m glad my awesome bass-playing dentist, who sent me the message below, exists.

I’m glad I exist and could read this message from my dentist:

You’re doing something great and I’m glad you exist

I’m glad Rhys — the wonderfully welcoming, kind, and perceptive server at Junior’s in Times Square — exists.

I’m glad my iPhone exists so I could take all these other photos yesterday.

Day 2621: Don’t be afraid

Yesterday morning, I had a conversation with a man working at the Starbucks in the New York City hotel where Michael Bloomberg later announced dropping out of the U.S. Presidential race. Here’s the conversation:

Him:  How are you?

Me: Afraid.

Him: Why?

Me: The coronavirus.

Him: Don’t be afraid.  It’s the people who are afraid who are going to get the virus.

Me: Now I’m REALLY afraid.

Him: (laughs)

Me: I do a daily blog. Could I take a photo of you saying, “Don’t be afraid”?

He was not afraid to grant my request.

IMG_2112

Last night, walking back from seeing the wonderful musical Dear Evan Hansen with two  dear friends, I noticed this sign:

IMG_2134

Don’t be afraid of  these other recent photos from my stay in NYC and don’t be afraid of clicking on any photo to enlarge it.

Don’t be afraid of “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen.

Don’t be afraid to leave a comment, below.

Don’t be afraid to express gratitude and to accept it, every day.

Day 2620: New York Attitude

Do you see a New York attitude in my photos from yesterday?

At West Side Story last night, the guy sitting next to me told me his wife wouldn’t go to the theater for fear of catching the coronavirus. I’m not sure what my attitude is about that.

What’s your attitude, here and now?

My attitude, as always, is gratitude.

Day 2619: Something’s Coming

Something’s coming. What’s coming?

Super Tuesday, some super things made by my friend and fellow group therapist Jenn …

… some delicious things at two NYC restaurants, fears about the coronavirus, the coronavirus, new habits and behaviors because of the coronavirus, and “Something’s Coming” from the new production of West Side Story (which I’m seeing tonight at the Broadway Theater across from our hotel).

Something’s coming in the comments section, I assume.

Finally, something’s coming and it’s gratitude that we’re all still alive, as always.

Day 2618: What I found, continued

Yesterday, what I found included this:

IMG_2022

Look what I found in New York City!

IMG_2042

I found hope right across from our hotel, where I’ll be facilitating a group of group therapists today.   I hope that goes well and I hope you enjoy all the other photos I took yesterday:

As usual, I found gratitude all around.

Finally, here‘s a favorite New York song I found on YouTube:

What I also found right across from our New York hotel, besides hope, is the Broadway Theater, where I’ll be seeing the new production of West Side Story tomorrow night.

Please feel free to share what you found in this post, below.
