Day 3964: The World Before Your Feet

The World Before Your Feet is a wonderful movie about Matt Green, who decided to walk all 8,000 miles of the streets of New York City after he walked 5,000 miles across the United States. Yes, there are more miles to walk within NYC than directly across the USA — a fact that knocked me off my feet.

I temporarily stopped watching The World Before Your Feet because a painful right ankle has been making walking — which I love to do — very unpleasant since August, and I felt jealous of Matt Green and his joyful walking. Twice my ankle has been x-rayed and twice I’ve been told it’s probably arthritis; nothing has helped the constant, daily swelling and pain go away for months. That hasn’t stopped me from walking, but it has stopped me from loving the experience like I used to.

Yesterday, I went to see a podiatrist and now I feel like the world is at my feet again because he said

  • It’s not arthritis,
  • It’s ligament inflammation, and
  • It should be cured by custom orthotics.

While I’m used to the world being amazed at my very unusual heart, yesterday four foot specialists were amazed at how incredibly flat my feet are. (“Wow! Those are the flattest feet we’ve ever seen. They should be in a textbook!”) While that reaction caught me flat-footed, I’m ecstatic that I’ll be able to happily explore the world with my very flat feet again, very soon.

Thanks to Matt Green, Dr. Kevin Riemer, Joan the cat (whose paws sometimes pause), punny people on Twitter, and all those who help me do this feat of daily blogging, including YOU!
