Yesterday, in a therapy session, I suggested that somebody try unconditional self love. This person asked, “How would I do that?” and I replied, “Redirect some of that unconditional love you have for your children toward yourself.” When they said, “I don’t know how to do that,” I responded, “It’s difficult to do something for the first time, but I strongly recommend that you start trying NOW.”
Why is it so hard for us to have unconditional self love? Earlier in the day, somebody else expressed the fear of feeling too good about themselves. I asked, “Why don’t we have a fear of feeling too bad about ourselves?”
Is there unconditional self love in any of my images for today?

Here’s what I find when I search for “unconditional self love” on YouTube.

Unconditional love for all that are here, now, including YOU!

To help along your unconditional self-love prompt, Ann, how about a pretty sweater day?
I think we should love ourselves no matter what we’re wearing, Mark!
I laughed when I saw “soaked” on your feelings chart. I gather you got wet on your way to work yesterday. Sorry about that!
good point about not having a fear of feeling too bad about ourselves, we’re quick to feel bad about ourselves, we should be just as quick to feel good about ourselves!
I can come up with many reasons to feel good about myself, but I don’t like to forget my failings, either. That being said, I think I have *almost* unconditional love for myself these days. I like balance.
I started loving myself when I had just lost my mother after not leaving her side for 3 weeks while she died(I’m a nurse). My siblings were attempting to make me feel unappreciated by refusing to help me pay my bills after 2 weeks without pay. But I APPRECIATED MYSELF!
They then had ‘fun’ demeaning me while I took care of our father dying of dementia. The best thing I did for myself was-knowing I was fulfilling my promise to him to keep him home to die instead of in a hospital or nursing home-to stop talking to them. Whatever their reasons were for being so ugly to me-didn’t matter and I was no longer participating.
I’m now traveling in my camper after selling house 3.5 yrs ago. My favorite song is “I feel good!” By James Brown. I dance to it frequently. Another favorite song is “She used to be mine”by Sara Bariellas. Powerful song about growing into acceptance.
I’ve been thinking that when I get frustrated with myself it’s because I know I can do better. That’s self love but self love is also being patient with myself.
I’d say self love is laughing at our mistakes instead of putting ourselves down because of them. give ourselves the same grace we naturally give to others
My ugliest piece of clothing was made by me in Home Ec in middle school. The project was a vest & skirt set, and we were instructed to buy wool fabric. That was fine—except my mom convinced me at the store to select her favorite color, which was olive green (the same color that was featured in our living room at home at the time). I was not then, and am not now, a fan of that color. I made the outfit, wore it a couple of times, and tossed it out as soon as I moved away. Ugh, ugly.
