Day 1257: Is that a helpful thought?

Is that a helpful title?

Since I try to be a helpful psychotherapist, I help people identify  automatic and unhelpful thoughts, also known as cognitive distortions. If you think it would be helpful to see a list of those unhelpful thoughts, I can help — click this helpful link.

Because unhelpful thoughts — including catastrophizing, personalizing, blaming, mind-reading, shoulds, and labeling — feel like “the truth,” it’s helpful to identify and challenge them. I try to help people do that with cognitive distortion “antidotes” (which I’ve helpfully listed here).

However, no matter what the unhelpful thought, there’s an all-purpose, one-size-fits-all way to help yourself challenge it: the helpful title of today’s helpful post.

So, if you notice yourself feeling worse because of a thought you’ve just had, please help yourself by asking this question:

Is that a helpful thought?

If the answer to that helpful question is “no,” then help yourself by dismissing that thought, however you can.

Here’s a short list of unhelpful thoughts I’ve encountered recently:

  • I don’t know what I’m doing.
  • Other people don’t know what they’re doing.
  • Nobody cares about me.
  • This is going to kill me.
  • I am not worthy of love.
  • People don’t like me.
  • I am clumsy.
  • Life will never get better.

Is that a helpful list?

Is that a helpful photo? Yesterday,in therapy, when somebody had the unhelpful thought  “It’s all my fault,” I helped them replace that unhelpful thought with the more helpful thought of “I tried.”

Are any of these helpful thoughts?

Is it helpful that WordPress just published this post before I was ready?

It’s not all sweetness and understanding.  Sometimes you have to kick ass with some helpful music.

Is it a helpful thought to thank everybody who helped me create today’s post?  Is it a helpful thought to appreciate you for reading it? I think “YES!”

Day 1256: Needy

I need to ask this question: Why do people need to needle themselves and others about being needy?  Why do we need to define “needy” as something that needs to be negative?

We all have needs.  We need to rejoice in being needy.

In a therapy group yesterday, I needed to make a list of many needs.

IMG_2788

IMG_2789

With 51 needs (incorrectly numbered  as 43 above), I am obviously very needy.

I need to tell you  that I need more sleep (#22 above) these days because I need to have heart surgery in September. I also need to ask why it’s so hard, sometimes, to get what we need.

I need to share the other photos I needed to take yesterday.

Needy Ann needs to share the pleasures of some needy music with her needy readers.

What do you need, here and now?

I need to thank everybody who helped me create this needy post and you — of course! — for needing to read it.

Day 1255: Turn Yourself Around

Because I’m a psychotherapist, every time I turn myself around I encounter somebody wanting to turn themselves around, towards health and a better life.

Yesterday, I turned myself around at work and saw this:

IMG_2754

Later that day, during a turn-yourself-around therapy group, I turned myself around to describe how our lives turn around and around and around, while we grow and learn. (If you want to turn yourself around to learn more about that, turn yourself to the sixth blog post I turned out here — The Ascending Coil.)

Then, I turned myself around to meet my boyfriend Michael, and we turned ourselves around towards Norfolk, Massachusetts to attend a memorial service for his late mother.

When her five children, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren turned themselves around  to remember and honor her, I turned myself around to take a few photos:

That’s Bobby, my boyfriend Michael’s nephew. When Bobby turned himself around to ask me if I was still blogging, I turned myself around to answer, “Every day.”

Would any of my other photos from yesterday help anybody turn themselves around?

I am now going to turn myself around, towards YouTube, for some turn-yourself-around tunes for today (here and here):

Now I shall turn myself around to thank all those who helped me create this turn-yourself-around post and you — of course!! — for turning yourself around towards here, today.

Day 1254: Important

How do we decide what’s important, moment to moment?

Which of these photos seem most important to you?

Which of the four musical references in this important post  is most important to you?

If you receive this post via email and it’s important for you to get the links to those four musical references,  they’re here, here, here, and here on important YouTube.

What’s most important for me to realize —  as I’m creating this post on this important day — is this:  two months after my first heart surgery at age 10, I was looking good with my new kitty, Tuffy.  That’s especially important for me to realize as I face heart surgery, again, three months from now.

As always, it’s important to thank all those who helped me create this post and you — of course!  — because you’re so important to me.

Day 1253: How to improve the moment

How to improve the moment?

  1. Access your wisdom, from past experience, about how to improve the moment.
  2. Be as present as possible in the moment.
  3. Let go of fear and worry about future moments.
  4. Take a deep, cleansing breath.
  5. Let in the love that’s around you.
  6. Share your joy in the moment.

IMG_2694IMG_2697

IMG_2700IMG_2703IMG_2711IMG_2699

Music also improves the moment for me. Here’s some improve-the-moment audio I recorded yesterday at my son’s graduation from high school —  the Belmont High School a capella singers performing  Billy Joel‘s “And So It Goes.”

How do you improve the moment?

Thanks to all who helped me improve the moments in this blog post and to you — of course! — for sharing them with me.

#1 Sixteen Tons.

#2 Sunrise Sunset.

#3 The Schuyler Sisters (from the musical Hamilton, with the lyrics “look around, look around”).

Another day, another request for comments.

Another day, another thank you to all those who helped me create this post and to you — of course!  — for another visit.

Day 1251: Just because

Just because the title of this post is “Just because,” I’m going to share a photo I just took.

IMG_2626

Just because my boyfriend Michael’s mother passed away yesterday, our loving neighbor Karen gave him some cookies from Lakota bakery.  Just because Faxy the dog and Michael are great friends, Karen signed Faxy’s name, too.

I took these two photos yesterday, just because.

Just because a tea company tells me so, I’m going to

  • live light,
  • travel light,
  • spread the light,
  • be the light.

Just because I like to explore and share music through this blog, here are some “Just Because” songs.

Just Because, by Anita Baker:

Just Because, by Jane’s Addiction:

Just Because,  by Lloyd Price:

Just Because, by Elvis Presley:

Just Because by Brenda Lee:

Just Because by Ray Charles:

Just because we’re all mortal, all human beings share one thing in common — we’ll all die, some day.   Just because I like to ask questions, what else do human beings all share, besides our mortality?

Just because I like to answer my own questions, I believe that all human beings share a need to connect. Just because I believe that, I have become a group therapist who blogs every day.

Just because, please let me know your thoughts and feelings about this post.

Thanks to all who helped me create this post and to you, just because.

Day 1250: Rippling

What ripples does the word “rippling” create in your mind?

This description of rippling, from Irvin Yalom‘s rippling book Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death, has been rippling for me since I read it last week:

How does that concept of rippling ripple for you?

I wonder what ripples these photos of mine will create?

That last photo is rippling for me, right now, because it reminds me of these lyrics  I might sing tonight at an Open Mic:

They’ve given you a number and taken away your name.

Are those words rippling through your memory? Here’s how they ripple through this song:

I wonder how reactions to this post will ripple through today’s comment section.

Rippling thanks to all those who helped me create this post and to you — of course!  — for all the ripples you are creating in your life.

Day 1248: Did you ever wonder what was down the road?

I’ve been wondering a lot lately about what’s down the road for me, especially regarding my very unusual heart.  After years of  walking down a  life’s road where several doctors have disagreed  about what we should do about my aging, sturdy, reversed-road heart, I’ve decided to have valve replacement surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

I’m still wondering what’s down the road for me and my unusual heart, because there’s a chance that the surgery will make things worse for me down the road.

Yesterday, I wrote an email to my long-time-on-my-road cardiologist, Dr. Deeb Salem, about my wish to ask Dr. Carole Warnes, the Mayo cardiologist, for some numbers and data about that possibly down-the-road negative outcome.

Seems like here are some questions to ask her:

What are the chances the ejection fraction will go down with the valve replacement surgery ? If it does, what are the chances it will go up again?

Are you wondering what was down the road in that email exchange?  Dr. Salem replied, like so:

I doubt that she will have an answer to your question.

Further down that same email road, I wrote back to Dr. Salem:

Some of the most profound questions in the universe have no answers.

A wee bit down that email road, here was Dr. Salem’s response:

…….yet

Did you ever wonder what was down the road for you? I can tell you what’s down the road in today’s blog post.

Photos!

Are you wondering what’s next on this blogging road?

Music!

First, “The Long and Winding Road.”

Next, “Ease on Down the Road.”

Finally, my boyfriend Michael’s favorite Down-the-Road song, “Road Runner.”

I wonder what comments are down the road for me today?

Red-brick-road thanks to all those who helped me down the road of today’s blog post and to you — of course! — for joining me on this road, here and now.
