Day 3759: Giving a F*ck

As usual, I’ve been giving a f*ck about

  • climate change,
  • injustices,
  • the health and happiness of those I love,
  • my therapy groups,
  • blogging, and
  • helpful books, including this one:

Giving a f*ck might seem more uncomfortable than not giving a f*ck, but I agree with Dr.Wills that it f*cks things up if we don’t accept our feelings.

Actually, Dr. Wills makes a distinction between emotions and feelings — he writes that “emotions come from bodily reactions that are activated by neurotransmitters and hormones. Feelings are our conscious experience of those emotional reactions.” He also states “Feelings are emotions plus a story.” I’m now giving a f*ck about that distinction, because it matters.

For example, I’m giving a f*ck about our cat Joan’s eye problems and how they don’t seem to be improving despite our faithfully administering eye ointment twice a day. When I look at Joan’s eyes, I feel the emotions of fear, sadness, and anger in my body. Then, I notice I’m telling some familiar stories about medical situations that include helplessness, distrust, and and worry that people are making mistakes and innocents are suffering. I can’t control the emotions but I can control the stories I tell about them.

And because you might be giving a f*ck about Joan, know that we are taking her to our giving-a-f*ck vet again this week.

Do you see giving a f*ck in my images for today?

On Nothing Like a Dame Day, the Daily Bitch seems to be giving a f*ck in her own way.

And if you’re giving a f*ck about National Haiku Poetry Day, here’s a haiku about how I’m giving a f*ck about taxes:

April 17th,

Will my payments be in time?

If they aren’t, I’ll live.

Here’s what I find on YouTube when I search for “giving a f*ck”:

As always, I’m giving a f*ck about thanking people who help me blog every day, including YOU!

Day 3399: What’s in your head right now?

What’s in your head right now?

What’s in my head right now is

  • music from Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George,”
  • gratitude for another day,
  • appreciation for those I love, and
  • resentment about things I have to do that I don’t want to do and which I’ve tried to set limits about many times in the past.

I’m sharing that list to get the last item on it out of my head, so I have more room in my head for better things.

What’s in your head right now as you look at my images for the day?

What’s in my head right now is that the Daily Bitch is overestimating the percentage of humanity that is utterly awful.

“Children and Art“ from Sunday in the Park with George is also in my head right now.

Feel free to share what’s in your head right now, below.

Gratitude is in my head right now so thanks to all who visit my blog, including YOU.

Day 1591: Helpful

If you read any of my helpful posts on this blog, you’ll see that I use the word “helpful” a lot.

I shall now provide helpful links to my four previous helpful posts with “helpful” in the title (here, here, here, and here).

I wonder if it’s helpful for me to remember that the last time I wrote a blog post about a word I use frequently (Day 734: Actually), somebody actually tried to be helpful by advising me about how to use that word less. Is it helpful for me to confess that I don’t want to use the word “helpful” less, because I like the word “helpful”?

Is it helpful for me to speculate why I like the word “helpful” so much?

I guess I like to be helpful to other people, especially in my work as an individual and group therapist. I also think it’s helpful for me to remember that people I want to help are in control of any helpful changes I might wish for them. Perhaps it would be helpful to quote this helpful lightbulb joke right now:

How many psychotherapists does it take to change a lightbulb?

One, but the lightbulb has to really want to change.

Here’s my first helpful photograph from yesterday:

It might be helpful if I explain that photo. “Is that a helpful thought?” can be a helpful challenge to any cognitive distortion, including shoulds, fortune-telling,  catastrophizing, mind-reading, blaming, labeling, comparisons, and overgeneralization. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a helpful book by Mark Manson.

Are any of my perhaps inexplicable photos from yesterday helpful?

Since people liked the octopus cookie in yesterday’s post, I thought it would be helpful to take and share that last picture.

Here‘s a helpful video from YouTube:

I always find comments from my readers very helpful.

Helpful thanks to all who helped me create this post and — of course! — to helpful you.
