People seemed surprised that our New England weather is so warm near the end of October, although that doesn’t really surprise me. The weather may not be the kind of October surprise that influences the election, but it seems like nothing can influence the election at this point, which does surprise me.

I was surprised this morning to see the row of buckthorns lining the back fence had all turned golden yellow. The one outside my office window, my gray stick tree, is mostly gray sticks now, its leaves having flown away.
